Thursday, June 18, 2009 Well, started a new job on Monday with Impact Resource group and have been training all week for 8 hours a day. Monday in Bristol, TN. Tuesday in Wise, VA. Wed. in Paintsville, KY and Today in Pikeville, KY. Tomorrow will be in Kinsport, TN where I will meet up with Alicia, Kelsey and Alecia's b/f and his mother who are coming to visit for the weekend. Someone is shooting fireworks (or a gun(?)) outside woo hoo!!! I rec'd my second piece of mail art from Richard in Il today. I gotta really try and get a piece made for him and Brent to be mailed out in the next couple of days before I fall behind.
Saturday, June 13, 2009 Last Night 6/12/2009 6:58 PM I sent an email to mosa@imagmailart.cjb.net after visiting the artistampnews.com website, which states: Submitting to mailart calls is a great way to stay creative and to also meet others in the network who enjoy similar or varied interests. As opposed to the elitist and exclusionary rules of art projects which employ judges who select entries based upon the whims of the few, mailart welcomes the participation of nearly anyone who would like to create and share the results of their efforts with others. Anyone can issue a mailart call. Some projects have specific formats and techniques. All of the calls listed on this page have cut-off dates, so you need to mail your artwork early enough to insure that it will arrive before the deadline. The best of these projects will exhibit the submitted work in a physical space, and almost all will create some type of documentation that recognizes the contributions of the participants. Some have themes. Those who issue calls with themes hope that you will respect the project by creating artwork that is related to those individual themes. You are invited to play, and to issue your own mailart calls. The Subject Line of my email was: "Please post this call to artists listing on your website.) The email was: 2009 T.A.R.O.T. Project Tarot and Religion Occult Transformations Call To World Wide and Mail Art Artists using the Tarot, Religion, Occult and Transformational Imagery in thier Art work: No jury, no fee, no returns FREE to enter, ENTER NOW and enter as often as you wish!!! Later last night, this appeared on the website: DATED MAILART CALLS last updated June 12, 2009 Selection for inclusion on this page is based upon a number of criteria. I have instituted a general review of the calls on this page purely as a means to aid those new initiates who have little or no experience with mailart. Some of the considerations that I use are if the call is targeted at visual art, whether the work will be exhibited, if there will be documentation, and if there is a known history of coordinating. If you like to explore, submit to any call purely for the sake of play and with no expectations.
one perf - unknown or insufficient information given two perfs - may lack some of the qualities of a complete call three perfs - good call four perfs - known coordinator, or with artistamp history five perfs - exceptional
If you have a call that you wish to have considered for listing here and it includes: a deadline to be received, an exhibition in a public space and mailed documentation for participants, please send it to me at the following address and include “mail art call” in the subject line. Listing is not automatic. toast@knoph.com So, I sent an enmail to this toast person at 6/12/2009 11:31 PM.

I received a reply from this toast person aka Greg Byrd 6/13/2009 12:06 PM Hi Chris,
Sorry, but I am no longer listing calls that are essentially "send me something and I will put it on my blog". Too many long time mail artists have complained about no real documentation or exhibition. Don't give up though. There are a number of calls pages that will allow you to post anything you wish. best to you g I replied via email at 6/13/2009 12:58 PM I thought I met ALL your rules. Did I say anything about a blog? I am glad that you have decided to make rules! Hitler made rules! Did you know he was also an artist???? People are always going to complain about something which makes others make RULES which is exactly what is wrong with the world we live in today! You should really check out my site as I am looking for inspiration for my own work and DO plan on making an art book. I admit that the Hitler thing wasn't very nice, but isn't art suppossed to be expressive, fun and uncensored? His reply that I rec'd on 6/13/2009 3:25 PM was very full of hate: Hi Chris,
Okay, Even though I was courteous and polite to you and wished you well, I can see you have a stick up your ass because you didn't get your way. I'll try to explain this in simple terms. Your call does NOT have an exhibition. Your call does NOT have any real documentation. Blog or website... the same thing. Your call is simply lacking in any kind or real networking elements. I caught crap all the time from real mail artists who built the network because I used to include calls like yours that were devoid of anything that supported the network. I finally had to listen to their reasoning and draw the line.
The calls page that I post to is my page... I maintain it and pay for all of the services required to keep it running. It doesn't belong to anyone else. Not only did I mention that there were other outlets available to you, but the obvious thing that you fail to realize is that you can create and maintain your on calls page if you wish and then include anything you wish. That is the Democratic part of the net... get it?
That you (may be) creating an "art book" (if people "donate" to you) does not give me any real indication that you intend to mail a copy of the book to all the participants. It could be a commercial endeavor for all you say... I do not list anything that has a money component to it, whether it is something like "send me a stamp" if you want me to let you know that I received your artwork" or "I intend to create and sell a book out of your submissions" (which a number of people have done recently). "Art Book" does not define your intentions.
After nearly 15 years of maintaining this calls page, I have to tell you that you are in a class of your own. Your fascist rant was more like Hitler than anything I've heard in quite a while Chris. Get your head out of your ass, wipe the shit out of your eyes and ears, take a good look at yourself and listen to what you are saying.
Don't hassle me. Do not email me again. If you do, I will report you to your ISP for harassment. It is people like you who take the joy out of life. WOW! I don't think it's me that has a stick up my ass! I replied 6/13/2009 6:32 PM : 1-I only have good intentions!
2-You don't even know me!!!
3-I never used any fowl language towards you.
4-It seems that with some of your listings are FAR less legit than mine.
5-I guess its discrimination based on religous beliefs (?)
6- You seem to be a VERY mean person.
7-I am truely sorry that your life is so full of hate.
8- I DO HOPE YOU FIND PEACE!
9-Excuse me for intruding in and finding your website! I do wish him the best in learning to LOVE and hope he truely does some day find PEACE! Or, gets a piece LOL Please view his site and see that there are more less legit calls than mine. I am the real deal and, just because I have been alseep for the past 20 years, I mailed out my first piece of mail art in 1981. I hope all read this to see the truely wicked world we live in. Yes, there WILL be an art book printed of this project!!!
Saturday, May 23, 2009 After going on vacation and visiting the Salvidore Dali museum in Tampa, FL a couple of weeks ago and visiting the local exhibit of Dali paintings yesterday with my sister Doris and new friend Bonnie Asher at Dr. Pelagrini's office I have decided to FINALLY start my Tarot paintings. These paintings have always been in the back of my mind but the time or motivation has never presented itself. I am sdtarting to paint with the Oil paints I purchased about a year ago and will probably continue painting in oils. I just quit work at the local IGA grocery store. It appears that since I have been working there that my artwork has really suffered. The job was not only detrimental to my work, but it was literally sucking the life out of me! I pdo plan on doing one more painting to add to the Speak Your Piece series if The Mountain Eagle Printed my comments made about the owner a couple of moths ago. I will really have to reseach that. Self, Remember GRAPES! I hope to later today post the pic of The Fool painting which I completed today and will begin The Magician later today. Gosh, I do hope I blog more now!!! I am putting aside the 7 Deadly Sins to continue The Tarot Paintings
Sunday, March 15, 2009 Has Anybody seen Oda Faye Couch??? Gemma Bently's looking for her!!!!
Saturday, January 17, 2009 I am planning on painting a series of ACEO's (art cards) and was researching the 7 deadly sins and found this page / lust test to be one of the (if not the most) funniest things/internet tests on the web! check it out at:
Tuesday, January 13, 2009 Its really hard to believe that it's been over 8 months since I have posted updates to my blog here! I have been working really hard at a 40 hr. week, then laying my fat ass on the couch, but I have lost about 10 lbs. since the first of the year and plan on painting a bit more this year, especially on the art cards. Painting small lets me get the ideas out quicker since time is a real issue with working. More updates to come....
Monday, April 28, 2008 Except for loosing my bets on the horses, Friday was a GREAT day at Keeneland! It was good to be in Lexington again except for the lack of time to see everyone and everything I wanted to do. I did have time to see Charlotta at Tattoo Charlie's on my way out of town. She is still one of my favorite college friends/artists! Last night was the Blackey Art Guild artist's reception at the Library in Blackey. Great fun in that most evryone was there except for Billie Blair who was one of my favorite elementary school teachers. I had bought a small amount of clay at Michael's on Friday and found out that there may be a kiln I can use at the grade school so, I'm really excited about that.
Tuesday, April 15, 2008 Made it to the Blackey Art Guild meeting last night after working all day in the grocery store. It was great to see everyone since I did not make it last week. We left the church and went to the library to hang our work. Click on the exhibition tab to see the flyer I made for the exhibit.
Sunday, April 13, 2008 Not much going on with no time to paint since I have taken a full time job at the local IGA in Isom, but I may paint some tonight :) I will deliver some paintings to the church tomorrow for exhibition in the 2nd Annual Blackey Artis's Guild exhibit at the Library Gallery in Blackey next week.
Sunday, March 30, 2008 Well, I missed last week's entry due to the fact that I had to rush mom to the hospital last Saturday morning and was at the hospital most of the day on Sunday. Nikki, Sarah and I went to Summit City on the 23rd to see Jason Isbell play. Easter was spent in the hospital with mom although me and Sarah did color eggs on Sunday morning. I will try to make it to our painting group in Blackey tomorrow night since it just slipped my mind with all the excitment of mom's sickness. A lot has happened in the past two weeks so, I'll attempt to fill in here. Sarah and I went to the East Kentucky Expo Center in Pikeville last night to see the band Halfway to Hazard who opened for Loretta Lynn - the one and only QUEEN of country music! it was great to see her in person. I got an email today from my college mentor Arturo Sandoval who was a great influence in my creative process. It was really great to hear from him as he is one of the best artists in Kentucky.
Sunday, March 16, 2008 OK, Here we go again with my procrastinations! This past week, I was followed around by Chris Fryer, a journalism student from Western Kentucky University who is using me as his subject for a piece he is doing for the Appalachian Cultural Project. You can see past workshops at http://www.acpworkshop.org/ . He took some really cool photographs and I can't wait to see them on the web...My 15 minutes of fame LOL! On Thursday, March 13th, I attended The Appalshop's screening of "A Stranger with a Camera" and the opening reception of photogrphs by Andrew Stern. Both were Great. It is good to see the appalshop again making use of thier gallery space and I hope to get more involved there. I am going to paint a portrait of Chris Fryer as the Stranger With a Camera when I complete the 2 paintings I am currently working on "St. Martha" and "Brokeback Hollow #2". On Saturday, I went to Appalshop's Yard sale and picked up a couple of neat trinkets. I am going to try to at least place an entry here every Sunday to tell of the past weeks events, but as in the past, I do not reccomend that you hold your breathe.
Sunday, February 24, 2008 Wow, Here I am recording my history aagain today, over a month since my last enrtry, but anyway................. I got a pretyy flattering email yesterday (just checked today after speaking with Joel last night at Summit City): hello chris, my name is chris fryer, i'm a photojournalism student at western kentucky university. a few of my fellow students and i are coming to whitesburg from march 7th to the 14th to participate in the Appalachian Cultural Project with a goal of documenting the community and its culture. i would like to do a story encompassing the arts out there and i was wondering about your interest in being a possible subject for my work. would it be alright if i give you a call in the next couple of days, if so, when would be a good day and time? thanks. - chris fryer Sounds like fun! Went to Summit City last night to see the Kelly Richi concert with Nancy, Jerry, Sarah and Nikki and had a GREAT time..... LOVE YOU GUYS!!! It was great to see my paintings again and that 2 have sold!
Wednesday, January 9, 2008 The Mountain Eagle . . Wednesday, January 9, 2008 . . Page 11 Artist gets inspiration from Speak Your Piece
Words submitted to Speak Your Piece are being translated to canvas by a Letcher County artist. “Speak Your Piece Unto the Lord” is the title of an exhibit of paintings by Jeremiah artist Chris Day, which are now on display at Summit City on Main Street in Whitesburg. The paintings were inspired by comments telephoned or e-mailed to Speak Your Piece, a reader-comment feature which has appeared in The Mountain Eagle since 1983. The exhibit will be on display daily through March 4. Day, who graduated from the University of Kentucky with a degree in fine arts in 1985, said each of the paintings was triggered by a comment to Speak Your Piece he found “humorous.” “Some of those comments trigger pictures of what that person is trying to say,” Day said during a reception marking the exhibit’s opening on January 4. Day said he is a fan of Speak Your Piece because “a lot of these problems you can relate to yourself and see that you’re not the only one. We all have our life’s little problems and if we didn’t have Speak Your Piece we would lose our minds. Like one piece says, we’d all end up in the psych ward at Hazard.” Day’s paintings carry titles like “Clowns and Calling,” “High Heel High School,” “Carrie,” and “Letcher County Gothic.” After graduating from UK, Day moved to Charlotte, N.C., where he found work with a child’s photography company. Because of promotions which required him to move around the U.S., Day said he quit painting for a number of years. He said he got the urge to pick his brushes up again after moving back to Letcher County and reading Speak Your Piece. “There’s enough inspiration here to keep me going forever,” he said. Some of Day’s most recent paintings have been exhibited in New Mexico and Arizona. Day lives in the community of Blair Branch. In addition to the exhibit at Summit City, some of his work can be seen at www.ChrisDayArt.com LETCHER COUNTY GOTHIC is the title of this painting by artist Chris Day. It is now on display at Summit City in downtown Whitesburg.
A NEWSPAPER CLIPPING from The Mountain Eagle’s Speak Your Piece is incorporated into this painting titled “Carrie” by Letcher County artist Chris Day. The painting is based on a comment from a young girl that appeared in Speak Your Piece earlier this year.
Friday, January 6th 2008 Like I said before,I really should "blog" more often! It's been almost a month and now that the Christmas and New Years thing is over maybe this year I will, but please don't hold your breathe. I met with Joel and his wife at the Summit City Gallery/Cafe last night and was amazed to find that they are locals! They both were really nice and I look forward to the opening of my artwork there tonight. Please visit thier business at 114 Main Street in Whitesburg. Please, if you are reading this, PLEASE click on the "Contact the Artist" tab and send me an email to let me know who you are! It was kind of shocked to find that 32 people had visited my website already this month. One guy did send an email. THANK YOU G. N. !!!
Saturday, December 8th 2007 I really should "blog" more often, but that cuts into my priceless painting time! I completed the 9th painting in the Speak Your Piece series called Clowns are Calling. This is the first painting to bear my new designed signature: After years of playing, I think I finally got the one I am happy with. It may change tomorrow. LOL
Tuesday, November 13th 2007 I met up with the painting group last night in Blackey and completed the painting Brokeback Hollow when I returned home. Mailed my paintings to the Cattle Track Compound in Scottsdale this morning and did my merchandising gig at Food City. I rec'd more great news in the mail today from the Appalachian Artisan Center: "Congratulations! We are writing to inform you that your artwork has met the standards of our Quality Review Process. This means that your artwork exemplifies the level of high quality craftsmanship and creativity that we represent at the Appalachian Artisan Center. We look forward to this opportunity to work with you to market your wares as we promote the best eastern Kentucky has to offer in our exhibit and retail gallery. We are including helpful comments made by our judges for your review. You are now eligible to display and sell your work in the retail gallery. The retail contract and other information will soon follow." Quality Review comments included: "In "The Garden of Eden" the accusation comes through in the picture. It is very colorful!" ""Aunt Mag's" creates an interesting atmosphere....." "Colorful! Good work! I like the comical touch on "Aunt Mag's". No problem with the presentation." "Good color, composition and balance."

Monday, October 22nd 2007 What a day! Kind of productive anyway! Got my application complete and in the mail to the RAIR program in Roswell, NM. Missed the painter's group in Blackey tonight to go to town with mom to buy a new car which is a scary thought, but I guess she'll be able to get back on her feet a bit more since she will be moving around more AND, I rec'd another GREAT email from The Cattle Track Compound/Gallery in Scttsdale, AZ.: Chris- Thank you for your submission to Cattle Track. We would like to exhibit a few of your paintings and maybe the shadow boxes. Is Rawhead & Bloody Bones available? I also like Adam & Eve and The Magdelene Laundries #1. Let me know what you have avialble and I will contact you with further details soon. Thanks. Kathleen Thomas
Sunday, October 21st 2007 It's GREAT to hear simple, feel good words of support as those I recived earlier today from a friend: Chris, WOW! I am absolutely impressed. Your stuff is unbelievably good. I like your older stuff a lot, but the new stuff seems so much more developed. It's hard to believe that you haven't been creating in so long, but at the same time have been able to hone your craft without much practice. If I were you I would really push to get this stuff "out there" to the "right people". No question, you could sell your work but you really have a unique style and I believe that you could make a name for yourself. I wouldn't stop at trying only sell your art but push harder to make a name for yourself and your style. I can't wait to show this stuff to some of my art oriented friends- I am really proud of your creations.I don't know what else to say except that this is your thing and I hope you keep on it - you have a talent that I was never aware of. Keep in touch and keep me updated.
Saturday, October 20th 2007 Wow! It's been almost a month since I have put anything on this here blog page. Been too busy being unemployed and making art and trying to entertain the mom. I completed Cornshuck Dolly this morning and have 4 paintings in the works and still looking for the right stuff for the "Deliberate Cruelty" piece. As Margaret Hamilton would say, "These things take time." LOL Aside from being unemployed, broke and depressed I had a good day with Cornshuck Dolly, taking photos for first photo shoot as the worlds next top super model.
Friday, October 19th 2007 PORTALES—Eastern New Mexico University’s Runnels Gallery in Golden Library in Portales will present FOOTLONG, a national juried exhibition of art no larger than 12 inches in any direction. The exhibition will run from Oct. 19 to Nov. 15 with an opening reception on Friday, Oct. 19, from 5–7 p.m. It is free and open to the public. The 30 artists represented are from across the U.S., with a radius from New York City to Orange, Calif. The artwork ranges from fused glass to fabric to oil paint. Subject matter encompasses traditional portraits to the abstract, including exotic. Juried by Stephen Fleming, director of the Roswell Artist in Residence Program, a selection of 38 works were selected from over 100 submissions.
Monday, September 24th 2007 I started a small still life painting today that I will call "Sweet Tea with Lemon and Key Lime Pie." This idea came to me after making some home made chocolate pies on Saturday. I also began another box art piece which I am incorporating a photo collage that I did in the early 80's. This piece I will call "Deliberate Cruelty." I cut the wood today out in the shed and have the photo glued and clamped to the wood for overnight drying. I hope to at least have the shadowbox piece complete before I leave for Beyond Wonder on Thursday.
Sunday, September 23rd 2007 I sat up till 3AM and finished the Painting "Rawhead and Bloody Bones Play the Bonaventure" after once again seeing my most favorite films of all time last night "A Streetcar Named Desire." And now, I have a new favorite quote from Blanche DuBoise since my life seems to relate so much to hers: "Deliberate cruelty is not forgivable! It is the one unforgivable thing, in my opinion, and the one thing of which I have never, never been guilty of."
Friday, September 21st 2007 I dropped off three paintings at the Appalachian Artisan's Center yesterday for thier bi annual quality review. I will not know if they will accept my work in thier gallery since it is mostly crafty type quilting, corn husk dolls and woodworking from local crafts people, but I'll know by Oct. 15th when the judgeing is done. The three pieces I took were all small and no shadow/box art pieces. I submitted "Lookin' for a Relationship" which is not one of my better paintings, but because it relates to the area and what the people here complain about in the "Speak Your Piece" column of "The Mountain Eagle." I submitted "Adam and Eve" which is the first of the Bible Paintings and is not yet posted on my site, but soon to be. It has been hard to get photographs since my best camera is not working properly and I only get about 1/4th of the photos because of a shutter problem. Also submitted was "The Painter on the Road to Blackey" which is a self portrait/reproduction of Van Gogh's painting "The Painter on the Road to Work." There is a small group that I belong to, of painters that meet every Monday eve in the basement of the Presbeterian Church in Blackey. I saw this painting shortly before going and thought it would be a great painting to document my time with this group. It has been a month since I contacted the Appalshop as to the use of thier gallery space, or to help with their plans of getting the space refurbished or back in use. It's a shame that the space remains vacant. Still no reply.
Wednesday, September 5th 2007 I'm sooooooooooooo excited! An email I rec'd today said "Congratulations your work Inept Doctors has been selected for the FOOTLONG juried exhibition at Eastern New Mexico University. Accepted work will be due on or before September 28, 2007.
Sunday, September 2nd 2007 I started painting Rawhead and Bloody Bones last night. I was going to do it in oil instead of acrylic, but after a week and a half of waiting for the black background to dry, my impatience gave in and I had to start it. I'm not sure that anyone knows what these guys look like, and for those of you who don't know Mr. Rawhead or Mr. Bloody Bones, they were the guys that would come to get ya if you didn't go to sleep at night. At least that's what Mamma Tiny used to say. If any one knows the story, if there was one, please let me know. Pictures of this painting will be on the website when completed. Today's Words of Wisdom from Mattie Jean (mom) "A quarrelsome woman and a crowing hen don't bring nothing but a no good end!"
Thursday, August 30th 2007 Being unable to work at CROSSMARK due to lack of work available, I have a little time on my hands and decided to drive up to Lexington today to see the New Faculty exhibit at the Tuska Gallery in the Fine Arts Bldg. at UK. I just wish I had of left earlier in the morning to be able to spend more time on campus. Although I did not meet the artist, Ebony Patterson's Vulva series was very interesting to say the least! I really liked the FEEL ME UP - PLEASE piece where she had sewn together a lot of Kotex pads and it was laid out on the floor, I guess it was supposed to be her vaginal tube (?). It was GREAT seeing Arturo Sandoval again!!! He was my mentor for my BFA program. He intorduced me to the Dean and other faculty members as the one who had first required a Must be 18 years old to enter sign posted at the Gallery entrance. Maybe thats why I liked Ebony stuffing her Vulva in my face with the large 5 ft by 8 ft paintings on paper LOL. I did get to stop by Tattoo Charlies and see Charlotta for a minute, but she was busy giving a tattoo so i never really got to speak with her. She really needs to free herself up for a day and go gallery crawling with me in Louisville or Cinncinnati! (Charlie, I hope you get to read this LOL).
Thursday, August 23rd 2007 I had tried to contact The Appalshop about getting my work in thier gallery which is not in use at this time. I really think they should do more for local artists as there are many in the area. Here is the reply I rec'd. Dear Chris, Thanks for contacting us. We are in the process of rethinking how we use our gallery space – and hope to do a little refurbishing soon. When we are a little clearer as to our plans, we will be back in touch. Best wishes, Beth Bingman Managing Director | |
